Not as much as some would have you believe. Shuttle was already
evolving in it's current direction even before NASA started courting
other customers.

Had NASA built their alternative Shuttle, basically a 75% scale model
of the current one, they'd have been even worse off because it
wouldn't actually be able to do anything useful.

Wild that there is talk about reviving the Buran the Soviet Shuttle.
