I struggled for quite awhile as to why Richard Branson got involved in this
Paul Allen venture to such an extent and then it dawned on me. If SpaceShip Two flights become seen as "routine" (i.e. can go a significant amount of time w/o a mishap, flying more or less ordinary people) it would not be much of a stretch to build several White Knight carriers in possibly a third generation system and deploy them around the Pacific Rim. With a few SpaceShip "Three" designs you can almost visualize a nifty way to offer 2-3 hour Tokyo/LA, LA/Sydney, LA/Beijing flights as a special business class. No more guzzling kilo-gallons of jet fuel that an SST/HST would require, no need to worry about "Sonic Booms", and if the scale is small enough (at least at the start) the environazis are likely to leave you alone, at least at the beginning. In essence you leap-frog right into the 21st century, bypassing a whole generation of aircraft technology (SST/HST) that has serious economic issues. And for the well-heeled business traveler, you get to experience zero-G no extra cost. And if that's a problem, just stay belted in. Of course to sell the "SpaceShipThree" concept you have to establish that the technology is safe enough to be considered beyond experimental. Hence the necessity of the SpaceShipTwo joyrides. This is the 21st century version of barnstormers giving the public rides. Remember folks, you saw it mentioned here first... :-) Dave |
