This doesn't have much to do with astronomy. It probably
should go in some discussion group dealing with arial photo interpretation... The Astronomy Picture of the Day for June 27 of this year: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap030627.html is a photo of "SpaceShipOne" -- An experimental spacecraft built by Burt Rutan and his company, Scaled Composites. On the ground far below it are rows of what appear to be posts, maybe 30 or 40 feet tall. You'll need to look at the large image (3008 x 2000 pixels, 2,860 KB) to see them clearly. What the heck are they? -- Jeff, in Minneapolis .. |

om: David A. Smith, Joe Jefferson, and Jim Barrett replied to Jeff Root: As others have pointed out, they're wind turbines located at the top of the Tehachapi pass, which is a few miles west of the Mojave (CA) airport where Rutan's company is based. Neato! How tall are the things actually? Enormously taller than my timid guess of 30 or 40 feet? Not counting blade length... -- Jeff, in Minneapolis .
