Why do you thin they would be philosophizing ?

What *else* could you do without a body??!!

A large segment of people in sciences, engineering and
IT do not really need bodies to do their work - they need
some input (largely computer generated input) and they need
to be able to give feedback back to computers. There is no
fundamental reason why hands and eyes absolutely need to be
involved in that especially if there was a faster and more
efficent way.

Okay, as fascinating as this is, I just have to post.

Guys, whoever has the technology to upload a mind into a computer,
will also have the technology to put a PORT onto the computer. To get
an idea, just look down at the device you are typing on... then look
how it connects to the computer... and then imagine that the device
could type back at you.

Or instead of typing back--whatever that means--imagine a pair of
legs, an arm, a virtual reality headset, a small bulldozer, whatever.

I'm not sure what you would use the port (except for networking ;-) for?

If your mind has been uploaded it obviously already interfaces with the
computer so extermely obviously there is no need for it to use some
external device to do so. Uploading a mind into a computer and then having
it manipulate 'hands' to type text into yet another computer sounds like
a rather bizzare - not to mention inefficent - idea.

I think he meant all the other stuff you use hands for, eg, operating
a bulldozer. Just because you're uploaded doesn't mean that you can't
do stuff in the real world. With the appropriate interface (ie, a
human body or a machine that looks like one), an uploaded person might
be virtually indistinguishable from any other people in the real
world.

In any case, there's no reason that philosophy will be the only thing
that uploaded minds do.

our descendants will *be* that AI.

Human brain speeds are doubling about every 100 000 years.
You pick the inevitable winner.

I still think "our" descendants will prefer to have a body, rather than spend
eternity philosophizing in a steel box.

Really? A significant number of people prefer the 'online life' of MMORPGs
even while the 's are still required around that phrase.

I think the point is that those uploaded people who want to work in the
real world with a real body, will certainly be able to do so. (And
those who prefer to live only in an artificial reality inside a computer
will be able to do that, too.)

Which has not required them to give up their bodies. If it did, I believe many
would chicken out.

Thats because they hae no grweat need of giving up their bodies. If
you were terminaly ill and had to chopose between dieing and a life
in MMORPG style enviornment, which would you choose?

Heck, if i had a real and practical choice between *living* (in real world)
or in a mmorpg, i would choose the virtual world. It is *so* much more
malleable than this hard physical reality of ours.

Yeah, remember that when the GMs nerf your genitalia in
the name of "class balance".
