One can argue that Viking in 76 was as big, or Voyager during the whole
decade of the 80s, or the 81 launch and landing of the shuttle. Did you
pick the 72 year out of your, err, hat?

No. 1972 was, obviously, the last time we had pictures of men working
on a planetary body other than Earth. This is the closest we have come
to envisioning man in a remote place since then. Obviously, it'd be
cooler if it was Joe & Jane Astronaut on the Meridiani plane instead
of a responsive robot...but I'll take robots for now.
