Default Perseids from Tenerife in 2007

Hi

I would like to find a spectacular place to view the Perseids from in 2007.

I live in Leeds, UK but the light pollution and variable weather make it
difficult to be certain of a good sighting.

I once saw pictures of the extinct volcano on Tenerife and it has a few
observatories up there so I got to thinking it must be a good sky viewing
location else they wouldn't have built them there.

With this in mind I am thinking of taking a holiday on Tenerife in August
next year and viewing the Perseids from said volcano.

I am not an astronomer, I would just like to see a good meteor shower in
full intensity from a good location with a near certain chance that the
weather won't mess things up.

Q1 - does Tenerife sound like a good idea? Will it be dark enough and will
the sky be clear on a typical August night?

Q2 - can you think of a better location, finances permitting? I am not
rich!!

Q3 - are there any downsides to Tenerife that I may have overlooked?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Regards
James

Hi

I go to Tenerife ~ twice a year for a mix of hols and observing.

You could stay at the Parador de las Canadas where there are some observing
facilities

http://www.pact.cpes.sussex.ac.uk/~kps/Tenerife.html

or get a package deal and drive up the mountain at night.

Good luck!

A 90% waning gibbous Moon on the night of August 11/12 - not specific
to Tenerife though

The original poster asked about the persieds in _2007_. Next year
the moon will be nearly new and won't affect night-time seeing.

You'll get truely dark skies in tenerife for about 8 hours that night
Obviously there's no guarantee the sky will be clear, but in the
Parador at 2200m you'll be above most of the low cloud.
(Actually the low clouds are your friends: they block any light
pollution from the resorts on the south side of the island)

Get a sun-lounger and position it in the shadows behing the swimming
pool to cut out the light from the hotel itself.

If you're interested in the observing quality in tenerife, it might be worth
taking a look at the Bradford Robotic Telescope. This is a completely
robotic telescope which can be used by school kids to take images of the
night sky.
