Default APOD 20/01 strange object

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ima...rion_hst_f.jpg

Can someone here please explain to me what the object in this picture
is? It appears to be solid.
Using the large new star in bottom left as a guide, follow a line to the
top. Just near the top and right, just above the orange wisp is the
object. Using full jpg size (2403x1682) it becomes quite clear.

Comments anyone?

Isn't that a beautiful picture? :-)
I suspect that the dark object is a proplyd (short for protoplanetary
disk)

Here is another artefact similar in an article dated of 2003
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ima...op_hst_big.jpg
which seems also be the same as another page dated from 1997:
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ima...op_hst_big.jpg that is
supposed to be taken in 1995?
Seems that the Nasa is really the bureaucracy that US people complain of ;-)

In the following link, Nasa explains that in this region of space there are
many proto stellar objects that have funny shapes.

One of the astronauts left a shoe in the OTA during a HST servicing
mission. ;-)

Thanks for the answers. It was the first time that I've seen something
like that. Maybe it could be a shoe ;-)

Yes, I think Jonathan is correct. This may even have featured as one of the
objects on early Hubble slide collections. Do not confuse protoplanetary
disk (star and solar system being born) with proto-planetary nebula
(solar-type star evolving into a white dwarf).

The star just on its edge may be a foreground object, but some of these
(depending on inclination) show central stars (protostars). This one looks
too far off centre to be directly associated.

I do believe example 5 on this webpage is actually the same protoplanetary
disk as in the APOD image.
