It was interesting to see the Spirit lander was photographed from Mars
orbit. Does anyone know if the Vikings were ever observed from orbit? Steve |

Malin says he has located VL-1, image is on his website. Looks like a rock,
it's covered with dust. "Stephen Bolton" wrote in message ... It was interesting to see the Spirit lander was photographed from Mars orbit. Does anyone know if the Vikings were ever observed from orbit? Steve |

If it weren't covered with dust, it'd be a WHITE spot. It's nothing more than a white spot! One might assume it is covered with dust, but it cannot be seen to be covered with dust (or not) - the picture is just too small. Jon |

Take a look at the recent orbital imaging of the Pathfinder site by the MGS camera: there is a *tiny* feature, looking just like any other rock, which can be inferred to be the Pathfinder lander only because it's in *exactly* the right place. The terrain around Viking 2 is so close to featureless that it can't be located that precisely, not now that it's long since coated with dust. -- MOST launched 30 June; science observations running | Henry Spencer since Oct; first surprises seen; papers pending. | |

I'd be surprised if it didn't stand out like a sore thumb in the infrared after sunrise or sunset. But not very surprised. Does anything orbiting mars have a thermal infrared camera? |

Not with anywhere near the resolution required. |
