Default Galileo project threatened by funding row | The Register

Published Thursday 6th October 2005 14:52 GMT

A row over funding is threatening the future of the Galileo satellite
constellation, according to the head of the Italian space agency (ASI).

In an interview with German newspaper Die Weit, Sergio Vetrella warns that if
the dispute, ostensibly about additional costs, but possibly having more to
do with national pride, is not settled by the end of the month, the whole
project could be in jeopardy.

Good. Galileo is just an expensive piece of EU grandstanding duplicating a
widely-used existing system. I don't want my money paying for it.

Your email is almost word for word what I was going to say, save that I
would add that I don't think we should ever have got into a system like
this, with direct military applications, with the P.R.C.

We?
To quote (misquote ?) one of my favourite non-PC remarks
"Who's this we, white man ?"
And how much of my money has already gone to Brussels and Beijing?

The advantage of having alternative systems is that people can decide for
themselves who they do and do not trust. Personally I am more prepared to
trust a consortium of countries including my native one, in which no one
country is powerful enough to abuse its position, to a single foreign
country that thinks too highly of itself.

Oh yes ? 20% of the world population + gives them a mighty fine say,
whatever anyone else says.
