In article ,
"George Dishman" writes:
If DM acted like extra mass at the centre, it would
be taken into account in the mass of the Sun which
is derived from plannetary orbits. It would then be
included in the prediction of Pioneers trajectory
so there would be no anomaly. If it is distributed
through the solar system, the velocities of the
planets should show an anomalous profile similar to
that seen in galaxy rotation curves.

Remember also the acceleration is constant over a
factor of more than 2 in distance from the Sun which
is hard to explain as a gravitational anomaly.

All correct, but in addition if dark matter were causing the Pioneer
acceleration, there would be "dynamical friction" causing orbits to
decay. The decay would be faster for smaller masses, i.e., faster
for asteroids than for planets. This is the same effect that causes
massive stars to "sink" to the centers of globular clusters.

Thanks for that Steve, in fact I mentioned that in a
separate post:

how DM could retard the craft without also
influencing the paths of planets and asteroids.
The latter is perhaps of more relevance because
their closer match to the mass of Pioneer. The
effect is so large that drag would have caused
the orbits of these bodies to decay long ago.

best regards
George
