If you haven't heard, David Sinden, former chief Optical Engineer of
Grubb Parson, Managing director of Sinden Optical, one of the finest
opticians of the 20 th Century, passed away on Monday after a long
illness. He had been suffering from cancer for some time.

A great, yet humble man has gone.

Agreed - his finest achievement probably associated with the AAT - see
http://www.aao.gov.au/AAO/about/aat.html

"Commissioned in 1974 (read a brief history), the Anglo-Australian
Telescope was one of the last 4-metre equatorially mounted telescopes
to be constructed. Its excellent optics, exceptional mechanical
stability and precision computer control make it one of the finest
telescopes in the world."
