Is this some weird sort of spam?
The same sort of stuff is appearing on sci.astro, with different From:
names that look fake and an abuse address that doesn't match the path
(if I'm reading it right).

This sort of spam is appearing in many groups, Jonathan. I've seen it
in the technical group that supports my news and email client, and in
the various English groups. Also in emails that are correctly
addressed and which contain no spam-killing words.
