The "download" is instant. You can use any software that works with a
webcam. I use VRecord, which came with my Toucam. I set it to 650
lines, which gives a decent sized picture.

As far as I can see, when you insert the video plug into the camera, the
LCD display is diverted to the video. Anything that you would
normally see on the LCD is now shown on the laptop. However, the
resolution seems quite good, but you still need to download the pictures
as normal.

I had been considering the purchase of a little portable TV/monitor to
help with focussing. However, these units cost £140.00 - and I wasn't
very pleased at the thought of another bit of kit sitting on the ground
- where it would almost certainly have been accidentally kicked.
