Default Could SS1 be exported?

Would the US government let Scaled Composites export a WhiteKnight/SS1
to
someone outside the US? As I understand the US export limits, the idea
is
to keep weapons or weapons tech from being exported. It seems like
they
might claim somehow it could be used for weapons tech. Personally I
don't think SS1 or the tech one would get by owning one would be good
for weapons. I guess the WhiteKnight could drop bombs from high up.
So what are the odds that they could get an export license?

Is VirginGalactic.com planning to launch from inside the US?

Depends a *whole lot* on where it's going. And also, I'm told, on whether
you are willing to spend the money to get a really good export lawyer and
have him push hard.

I don't remember anything being said about this issue... but it can hardly
have escaped their notice that there are serious practical advantages to
putting the operation in an area with generally clear weather and plenty
of uncrowded airspace. That is to say, the US southwest clearly wins big
over the UK for this, and the reduction in legal hassles is not entirely
insignificant either.

According to http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/3693020.stm flights
would operate from Mojave initially.

I seem to remember them saying that they would launch from other
places later, but can't find a reference right now.

I looked up Mojave on Mapquest. It is 20 miles from Edwards and 90 miles
from Hollywood. The ideal location would be close to lots of aircraft
and space people for experience, and lots of customers with more money
than they know what to do with.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's also thinking Bahamas...

Hmmm...would the US Virgin Islands work without an export permit? Same
area, and look at the name.

I am on the next island East of the Virgin islands, Anguilla. We have
a nice new long runway that aims out over the ocean with nothing upwind
of us till Africa. :-)
