GWB was finished in the early 30's.
![]() To get to NJ for those living in Scottish Harlem....the 125th ferry would take you across the river into Edgewater. This is how my mothers side of the family arrived in Edgewater and started buying homes on River Road... and Underhook Ave? My grandmother's sister's husband (last name Ward) was the President of the Bank of NY at the time the plans for the bridge were underway. While the bridge was being constructed, he and his constituents financed the building of the hundreds if not thousands of 6-8 floor walk-ups in Washington Heights. Comprende senor? Now, near Fordam University was a famous boxers home. (IIRC his name was Robinson.) He bought this home off my great Uncle. Yo. One more trivial fact: My younger brother's best friend's father was the "painter" for the bridge. He liked the color gray. This is neither false modesty nor reverse psychology. With this page I have lowered the bar in such a way as to make it almost impossible for a lowly flatworm to do worse. Enter at your own peril and as it's a free hosting site, shields up -- they can throw some really gnarly cruft at you. ![]() John Steinberg wrote: Hmm, Underhook rings no bells here, Undercliff.... my mistake. but River Rd. has undergone a remarkable transformation from the bridge down to West N.Y. over the last 15-odd years. I drove through there about 5 years ago, at night, after a Rolling Stone concert. I didn't recognize the place when we turned off of Blvd. East! Von Dolan's marina and "Friendly's Tavern?" were still there just b4 you get into Fort "Ree." (Old Buddy Hacket joke.) The gentrification is visible all along River Rd., but another block in off the Hudson and time has, mostly, stood still. A drive down River Rd. is now like a drive across midtown at rush hour - and this 24/7. Callahan's is still very much alive. So, there's still that. 1238 River Rd was always busy. ![]() always wake up my less than year old daughter Katie. She's now at college in DC. Time flies. My grandmother's sister's husband (last name Ward) was the President of the Bank of NY at the time the plans for the bridge were underway. BNY is still a major commercial bank. The Heights, alas, now serve as the illicit drug trade center. Yes, there are alot of Candy stores. Im sure a Snicker bar isn't $10.00 anymore. Are you missing us down there? The only things I miss are fresh fish, REAL pizza, and Melitta coffee. Otherwise, weather is great, skies are great, photography is great, cycling is great, landscaping and gardening almost 2 acres will be a challenge. The house is becoming "me" little by little. Coyotes yip and howl all night. Cows walk down the middle of the road. Javelinas graze in the yard. My son is still on the honor role and has adjusted to his new high school exceptionally well. The dog realizes that its no fun to play with cholla. Everyone is very friendly and very helpful. Its nice. Cathy |
