I muse on a "debate" that was actually a trial of the President's space vision. Along the way I warn of the awful price of political ambition. http://www.washingtondispatch.com/article_10350.shtml As I see it, the space program is in big trouble if Kerry wins. The sad point is that if Bush wins, it is in big trouble also. Space "vision" notwithstanding, the Bush administration plan of closing NASA would go on, packed with a lot of words about "the moon and beyond". If Kerry wins NASA will be closed without any "space vision" demagogy. Kerry has opposed in Senate to any space exploration expenses, and has remained silent about its plans to avoid losing voters. Bush has proven that the NASA *can* be shut down and downsized to a ridiculous rest of what it once was. The militarization of the civilian space program is well underway. |
