I was just looking at a satellite snap of Hurricane Ivan and suddenly
it hit me: in that position (taken on Sept. 13), it looked a whole lot like M51. The similarity was so striking that I made a composite picture. http://dt.prohosting.com/hacks/m51ivan.jpg Spooky, if you ask me! David -- If only 2^(7/12) were equal to 3/2, music would sound a lot better. |

The similarity was so striking that I made a composite picture. Similarly, Hurricane Frances looked like a perfect face on galaxy for several days running. In idle moments after I finished the "approaching hurricane checklist" I considered taking one of those satellite shots, edit it to remove the land, add a few fake field stars, and post it on alt.binaries.pictures.astro and see who could identify it. :-) If only 2^(7/12) were equal to 3/2, music would sound a lot better. I don't know. It might be too bland. I mean, what would consonance be without dissonance? Clear Skies, Craig in Tampa |

Dissonance doesn't come from the difference in temperings. (Major g, obviously.) ... Dissonance doesn't come from the difference in temperings. (Major g, obviously.) So, you're one of those "just intonation" fanatics eh! (Augmented g) Actually, I mis-read the formula. Since I don't use them much, I have forgotten many of the ASCII substitutes for math operators. Also, having previously made my living as a saxophonist, I can confidently say that dissonance CAN come from the difference in temperings. Simply listen to 5 saxophonists playing in "unison", or better yet, "octaves." :-) Clear Skies, Craig in Tampa |

Saxophones are not made well-tempered, right? Actually, they are SUPPOSED TO use the well tempered scale, but as we all know much variation can be introduced by the player. On the other hand, I've known several saxophonists that were ill-tempered. Q: What's the difference between a saxophone and a lawn mower? A: Vibrato. Clear Skies, Craig in Tampa |

Think about it: hurricanes, galaxies, water going down a drain, etc. Of course, all this can be explained scientifically but the fact remains that He likes them. Now I can find him a Christmas/B-day present. Maybe a nice protoplanetary disc or a Bing Crosby record. ;-) Shawn |
