Out of interest, what's a likely terminal velocity (_not_ the best
phrase in the circumstances) on Mars? Let's go back to Venus. You don't
even need a parachute. And best of luck to Stardust and Huygens, which
are hitting atmospheres next year. When does that Japanese probe come
back?

Exactly. This is a failure mode type often ignored in the popular public
forums. The same is true for the 1999 Mars Polar Lander(MPL) as a
possible failure mode. It would certainly explain why there does not
appear to be a large trail of visible debris in either probes' case..
