Default telescope setup

Hi folks
I am a new entrant to the hobby, and would appreciate some advice. I have
purchased a 2nd hand 114mm Newtonian telescope, which has no setup guide for
the mount. It is described as a EQ-1 mount, with an RA motor drive.
(Telescope is a Helios 114M). never having seen one of these before, (only
used an Alt/Az mount previously) are there any resources online or anywhere
else to help me here?
Thanks in anticipation
Gareth

Gareth,

Go to one of the main telescope maker websites (Meade or Celestron) or
a magazine website (Sky & Telescope or Astronomy). They have telescope basic
primers there that might help you.

Go to a shop that sells only telescopes, and he/she will demonstrate what
an equatorial mount is. When I first got mine, I was moving the scope with
the latitude adjuster and the screw that holds the tele to the tripod. I
wasn't
even aware that the scope could move freely on its own after locking those
two down. At that point, I was able to balance it by moving the weights up
a half inch. Now I just enjoy swinging it around:-)
