If I cannot get / expect excellent resolution from my current Arena
eye[eices, are the Plossl ones on ebay worth considering as an aftermarket
substitution?

You haven't given enough details to allow one to assess the theoretical
performance of the 'scope in order to say whether or not it's working as
it should. I'm not familiar with the brand, but I assume that 500 mm is
the focal length of the objective. Is it a reflector or a refractor? If
the former, it may be that it needs collimation (lining up the mirrors);
things can get out of whack during shipment &c. What is the diameter of
the objective? What are the focal lengths of the eyepieces you have?

This is the first place I've seen the name "Arena" except for in the window
of my local London Camera Exchange. Can anyone tell me about this brand?
I've searched the web but found nothing.

Sounds like a "house" brand. House brands tend to be inexpensively
manufactured and offered as to entry level market. Any lettering on
the eye pieces you might post, to offer some clue to their origin and
properties.
