Default Pronto vs TV-76

Not wanting to repeat what's been said on another current thread, i.e. "The
Ranger and the Pronto are no more", has anyone tested the Pronto and TV-76
side by side? We are talking about 6mm additional aperture in the case of
the TV-76 and better colour correction, but how does the side-by-side
comparison actually fare in practice? I have a Pronto (have had it for
years) and have been very impressed with its overall performance. I think I
have a good sample - it star tests very well (not that I would expect
otherwise). I can see the advantage of the better colour correction of the
TV-76 used for imaging, but used visually, is the TV-76 really that better
than the Pronto? If so I would be very interested to hear of actual
observations where the difference was really noted.

Regards,
Dave Randell

Dave,

Yep, I've had them side by side. Over 100x, no question the TV76
pulls easily ahead; not a lot of difference under 100x. Lunar and
planetary detail is easier to see and the TV76 really splits doubles
well with it's cleaner optics. You might check out Ed Ting's review
on Scopereviews.com. I think he has a little blurp about them side by
side as well, but can't remember for sure. If I had a Pronto already
and were thinking of going up in aperture, I'd opt for the TV85
though. Also, give TeleVue a call. They'll be happy to talk about
the differences as they've had them side by side a lot!

Clyde
p.s. Keep your Pronto, it's a good collectible. I'll hang on to my
little Ranger too.
