Default High attrition rate 2/ 2

Continued from previous message.

B think of a
B
B * Must be done at night; those who have families, work, etc. can't
B commit a lot of time.
B
B * Is expensive. While it is possible to get away with spending as
B little as $200 to $300, expenses soon add up quickly. Finders,
B eyepieces, software, chairs, magazines, etc. can easily add up to
B $1000 or more. I won't even go into aperture fever or apo fever.
B
B * Is limited. Most of us live under light pollution. If we become
B too lazy to travel, we can really only see a few dozen good objects
B (planets, brighter clusters, a couple of nebula). Quite frankly,
B after the "premiere" objects, a lot of deep sky objects just look like
B smudges with no structure (in light polluted skies). I think only
B die-hards can get excited about those.
B
B * Hard to time. I don't live under the best skies in terms of
B clarity. Between the clouds, jet stream, mosquitos, incredible cold,
B and bright moon, I probably can only get a handful of nights per year
B to actually view any of the less visible DSOs. I suspect others have
B similar situations.
B
B * Doesn't come easily. One option is using GOTO, but part of your
B money goes to electronics rather than to aperture. While you can find
B things relatively easily, you really can't see them. If you opt for
B aperture, you'll probably get a dob in which case you need to learn
B the sky, learn how to move and point the dob and know what to look for
B in your Telrad, finderscope, etc. This can be very frustrating for
B beginners.
B
B Just my $0.02....
B
