Default Spaceship One VS orbital energy requirement

I don't think that kinetic energy means all that much.
Once you are,,,disconnected from the Earth, and using a
reaction engine for propulsion, 'everythings relative'.
The only issue is velocity change.

Along the same lines, I note that it attained only one eighth of
orbital velocity, so only one sixty-fourth of orbital energy. Is that
latter computation too simplistic?

From memory, isn't the equation:

kinetic_energy = 0.5 * mass * velocity**2

Considering you've got that "velocity squared" term in there...

Ick, top posting.

That aside, "everything is relative" begs the question, relative to what?
This was always an important consideration when I was taking my dynamics
classes at university (including orbital dynamics and spacecraft attitude
dynamics).

When you're talking about achieving orbit, you need to attain a certain
velocity *relative to the earth* in order to stay in orbit. When you
re-enter earth's atmosphere, the velocity *relative to the earth* is again
important as it will tell you how fast you will be going when you hit the
atmosphere. At university, we called this your frame of reference. In this
case, the center of the earth is a convenient frame of reference.

Once you determine your frame of reference ought to be the center of the
earth, it means quite a lot to determine your velocity and your kinetic
energy relative to that frame of reference.

Hi All,

Heres some home footage from the launch....crappy camerawork on my part,
nothing a good edit cant save though

They ignited the rocket at 50,000 feet and we saw the contrail go
straight up, but it was right in the sun and my camera couldnt focus on
it....too bad

hope you enjoy

John,

Thanks for putting this up. However, right now at your ISP's
location, there are people saying "where are all these freaking (or
some version of that word) hits coming from" as they see the wisps of
smoke rising out of their server. In a moment or so (if not already),
you are not their favorite person.

But thank you, the video is much better than you give yourself credit
for, especially for those who could not be there.

Take care . . .

Google is your friend. It's amazing how fast you can find things if you
have the Google Toolbar installed. It's nice not having to first load the
Google home page to do a search.

Mozilla Firefox has a Google box included by design. Better than an

Thanks John.
I did consider that, however I have thrown far worse at them over the
years and they havent complained yet, so I think they can tough it out.

And thanks for the kind words regarding the actual video too.
I truly wanted to help convey the excitement we all felt of that
historic moment, hopefully it succeeded.

Major excellent footage, John! With the crowd hooting and hollering, it
makes you feel like you are right there. I had been under a rock all week
and missed the news footage, so other than a few stills on the 'net, I had
not yet had a chance to see the flight. Thanks!

The Other James

my pleasure, it was an amazing morning.
