We choose to go to the Moon?

The mystique of manned missions to the planets will always remain. However,
an automated heavy duty exploration system would be more useful. The
excitement of manned missions and the can do attitude of the
Mercury-Gemini-Apollo era is not there,especially the space culture has
dwindled.

The alternate energy program was squashed by the oil barons. Do you believe
the oil cartel barons look fondly on oil independence?

The space program is not petroleum dependent. Go HYDROGEN ECONOMY. or
natural gas. BUY a hybrid car. Support alternate fuel economic stimulus
programs. Be active in political debate but not on this newsgroup.

Sure.


Since they know we will eventually run out of oil and who is in a better
position to supply the NEXT source of energy.

A good company corners the market on their current product and works to
corner it on the next ones also.

Exactly. The fact some of the big oil companies are at the forefront of developing
'alternative' energy is one of the best hints that
(pick from the following)

1. Oil is running out.
2. Human driven climate change is worrying them.
3. Present or future /legislation/ about human driven climate change is worrying them.
4. They think they can get 'nice points' by pretending (2.).

Not political debate for me, being British, merely an observation.
Unfortunately, as research has no profit margin, it will always be
Government funded, thus you cannot separate politics from space exploration.

Private individuals and corporations also fund research. Some companies
have research and development (R&D) divisions... also when researchers
at universities (for instance) develop something with practical applications
that something is licensed to businesses for profit. This happens all
the time although I'm mostly familiar with the software end of stuff.
