From snidely:
Stuf4 noted that: snip Thanks for the info. There are effective ways of controlling spam other than breaking very useful features. GG broke many of the things that made it excellent. Like 'view as tree', exacting search, etc. View as a tree is still there. Thanks for clueing me in on that. What I remember is that it went away with no explanation. At least, I looked all over and could not find it. And the way the tree format displays now is hardly as useful as the very clear way that it used to appear. But maybe I will get used to it. ~ CT The advanced search options usually )(but not always) work well. There is debate even among users of "true newsreaders" as to whether cross-posting is civilized behavior or not (my answer: "it depends", and local custom is important). |

In article , says... From Jeff Findley: Thanks. I have always accessed Usenet via GoogleGroups. Never through a newsreader. And Google has taken steps to degrade the functionality of this service. I expect this was motivated by their desire to drive people away from these forums so they might move to other Google-controlled forums where they can make a buck off you with their ads. I can also tell because your posts don't limit the width to 80 columns. Yes, it's a hold over from the "old days" when text terminals were physically limited to 80 columns in width, but it's still a p.i.t.a. to have to scroll to the right in a "real newsreader" to read posts that are formatted this way. :-P My 'real newsreader' will autowrap what I read if it hasn't already been formatted. That said, I still prefer postings that are set up to not exceed 72 characters per line (so I get reasonable looking quotes when I read replies to them). -- "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable man persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man." --George Bernard Shaw |
