Sorry to respond to my own post, but the article says:

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation is funding a $17.5m feasibility
study and it could be ready for work by 2012.

This has to be a joke, right? Seventeen Million Dollars for a
feasability study? That's insane.

What about a 3m SCT? No, wait, a 3m f/15 achromat.. Will a 3m telescope
be less affected by seeing than a 9m telescope? If it's an APO, I hope it
costs 10x more than a regular 3m telescope otherwise it won't be a real APO.

A gentleman gave a talk on this at our club meeting last night. Quite a
project, but some folks are thinking even bigger - check out the
Overwhelmingly Large Telescope (OWL)....

Most of the cost of the feasibility study has to do with pumping all
the air away from in front of the mirror.

If Meade, will they offer the $99 eyepiece special?

If Astro-Physics, will it be wait listed 7 years?

If Televue, will there be a clamshell included as part of the basic
package? Ball cap?

If Starmaster, will Rick Singmaster spend hours over the phone walking
the scientists through proper collimation?

If Stellarvue, will it use one of those nifty red dot finders with the
big window?

If Discovery, will it be a solid tube, truss or split tube?

Inquiring minds want to know.
