US scientists have drawn up plans to build the largest telescope ever seen. Its 30-metre-diameter mirror would be almost 10 times as big as those in the Keck telescopes in Hawaii, currently the world's largest observatories. John. http://www.irishastronomy.com/ |

A gentleman gave a talk on this at our club meeting last night. Quite a project, but some folks are thinking even bigger - check out the Overwhelmingly Large Telescope (OWL).... http://www.eso.org/projects/owl/ Clear skies, Alan |

Not sure what the 'F' stands for but the "ORL" stands for "OutRageously Large" ;-) -- Pete Homepage at http://www.pbl33.co.uk CCD/digicam astronomy |

But, who will provide such a scope?
If Celestron, will they insist on using the HD Field Tripod? If Meade, will they offer the $99 eyepiece special? If Astro-Physics, will it be wait listed 7 years? If Televue, will there be a clamshell included as part of the basic package? Ball cap? If Starmaster, will Rick Singmaster spend hours over the phone walking the scientists through proper collimation? If Stellarvue, will it use one of those nifty red dot finders with the big window? If Discovery, will it be a solid tube, truss or split tube? Inquiring minds want to know. Randy |

Will Al make a 1,500mm Nagler for it, and will it blow the budget?
