"In cosmology, the cosmological constant is the value of the energy density of the vacuum of space. It was originally introduced by Albert Einstein in 1917 as an addition to his theory of general relativity to "hold back gravity" and achieve a static universe, which was the accepted view at the time.."

Imagine the following text appearing in Wikipedia:
"The granularity constant is the measure of the discontinuity of spacetime. It was introduced as an addition to Einstein's special relativity to achieve discreteness of spacetime and make relativity compatible with quantum mechanics."
The addition of the constant to GENERAL relativity is a familiar fact while an analogous addition to SPECIAL relativity sounds unreasonable and will never occur. Why? Because special relativity is DEDUCTIVE and does not accept fudge factors while general relativity is an empirical concoction (not even wrong). This means that empirical adjustment, including juggling with fudge factors, is the method of the creation and functioning of general relativity.
