Ahem...time was you could buy a 70mm apo (Chinese) for about $300.00. An 80mm was around $500. But apo scope prices have risen as models have become more luxurious. I saw a 100mm the other day that was about $1300 per inch of aperture.
The good thing is that the used market (except for AP and the like) has incredible bargains. I saw a 127mm TeleVue sell for $3500 and you see TV 76's go for around $1000 sometimes. The lowest priced scopes don't drop in price much used because there is a kind of "floor" of prices of around $250-$300.

I tend to like larger telescopes for their light gathering power and resolution and smaller telescopes for their transportability.

Always prefer a larger scope for everything really, but portability has its advantages.
