Well I heard folk on the tarmac wibbling on about it all, so you lot must
have been asleep.

Besides, all that can be said has been. Of course nobody is going to stand
there and say, if the Government had funded it it could have flown on for
another ten years, or that if the government had funded a replacement while
it was flying there would be no problems like now.
They are all protecting their future for employment.

It always amazes me that since science and discovery is what humans do, we
would not have the technology without it driving the rate of advance,
nobody seems to want to spend, what is, in fact a very small amount per
person, but seem happy to throw money down the drain on killing machines and
wars.

its completely daft.
Of course I'm not saying Nasa would be the best folk to do it, as they do
tend to get corporate paralysis in thinking , but its no reason to starve
the system so hard it cannot function.

Yeah, I went to bed after the "Go for the re-entry burn". 3 am (PDT)
was just a little long for me, even on summer schedule.

I felt immense sadness the very last time I saw Concorde touch down as
I was only a few hundred feet from the runway. Suddenly the whole
world got bigger, man took a huge step backwards, the pond took 160%
longer to traverse. It was 1975 all over again.

Today I tuned in to watch the Shuttle as I nearly always do, but
unlike many other events over the history of the shuttle the last
landing stirred no emotions. I thought it would, but it didn't.

Some dates in shuttle history are etched in my mind, not just the
accidents, I know where I was, who I was with, what else was happening
in my life. Today was a non event and I can't understand why.
Maybe I'm getting to old to care.

I just got back from two weeks in my hometown in Florida, about 20
miles from LC-39. Saw the launch (thirty seconds of it before clouds
interfered) and heard the sonic booms on landing. Damned loud
double-booms, too (Sounded like a .357 Magnum being fired across the
street.) Couldn't see Atlantis, though.

So I was there for the first Shuttle launch and the last.

Farewell, Shuttle. Now begins the long wait for Congress to lose
patience with SLS/Orion, kill it, and finally write a check to SpaceX,
Boeing, or SNC.

Also saw the Delta IV launch last Saturday at 2:45am (ugh!) which was
gorgeous and much, much louder than the Shuttle (probably because the
sky was perfectly clear.)
