It's hard to determine from the primitive graphics, but it appears that
the payload is detached from the upper support frame and slid out of from
under the spacecraft directly backwards, riding on the lunar truck's
flatbed.

Yeah, I saw that, wasn't really clear if that was what it was doing or
simply a shortcut in the demo.
