Hi all,

I've just started running boinc and I've noticed my cpu temp hovers around
70-72C. Is this ok?
Its a 3.2GHz P4 with HT.
Thanks,

Paul

That is a little on the high side but acceptable for an Intel P4.

Have you cleaned out all the dust?

What is the temperature when the CPU is idle?

Good luck,
Martin

When idle, it usually hovers around 50.

Sorry, one other thing I forgot to mention is that its a laptop, not a
desktop.
When I was searching round the internet to try and see if this was normal, I
found some comments saying that laptops run hotter anyway.
I keep it sitting on a wooden table so the underside is as clear as it can
be ie. its not sitting on a carpet etc.

Your's is quite cool for an Intel laptop!

I keep it sitting on a wooden table so the underside is as clear as it can
be ie. its not sitting on a carpet etc.

Don't try using it on your lap due to seriously hot medical concerns...

(You get you bits fried off!)

In short, no worries, it sounds very normal.

Happy crunchin',

Cheers,
Martin

Thanks for your help Martin.
Boinc in currently running in dual processor mode (HT) which added a couple
of degrees before, and Speedfan is reading 77C.
I found one article on the internet of a guy who had a 1.1GHz P3 which
reached the high 80's. Seems scary ... :-)
