Default Earthshine 23/03/04

Moon looked lovely this evening. Had to pop out and was going to
ignore it but temptation got the better of me...

I'm glad it did -- very nice. (And also very nice to see that, at that
scale at least, one would not guess that you are using an objective with
a cracked element!)

Best,
Stephen

I have masked the damaged area off which has stopped any 'star
flaring'.

To be honest, I can't really see any adverse effects from images taken
with this scope! I took a long exposure of the Orion nebula on Monday
evening as a comparison with others I'd taken prior to the drop.
There didn't seem to be any unwanted effects in the image (apart from
the results of poor polar alignment!).

Very nice Pete!

I was showing this to a pack of Brownies last night - got them thinking
about what they would see if they were on the moon. (After over two months
of waithing for a clear Tuesday evening, last night was our last chance
before the clocks change.) We were finally rewarded with some nice naked eye
and telescopic views of the 5 planets. Looks like another bulk order of
Stargazer badges :-)

Always satisfying to introduce these views to kids isn't it.
Particularly so to point out something as rare as Mercury. You never
know, you may have changed the lives of some of them.

Yep. Nice one Pete. I also thought the view to the west last night was
breathtaking . The earthsine on the moon and Venus like you could reach out
and touch it. One of those nights when you could really get a feel of the
solar system in 3D.

Interestingly, there are a couple of stars in my Earthshine image.
Could have done another parallax project and really seen it in 3D! ;-)

There is definately something magical about seeing the old moon in the
young moon's arms close to the horizon. As you say, it feels just as
if you could reach out and touch it.

My word, we're being very poetical on here today aren't we ;-)

Yeah we are, but I don't think that's a bad thing. Its easy to get caught up
in the science, I'm sure most of us here love that aspect of astronomy, but
it's also good to allow a bit of wonderment to take over from time to
time.......

A careless young snapper from Selsey
Found his scope, though broke, could still well see
So he imaged the Moon,
Not a moment too soon
As I can't find another rhyme for Selsey

On the other hand after a view like last night, prose just doesn't
hack it.

great picture!

i was going to try some images (have been waiting for weeks to try out my
new focusing technique last night - saw the earthshine very clearly on my
way home only to discover there was a large raincloud parked over my house
for the night..
