Default wasteful government spending??

Sorry, but that's how I see the latest probe sent up that's going to crash
into a comet. A huge cost for something like that! I can't see how
something like this can be justified other than NOT doing it at all in the
first place. Yes, there is a lot of wasteful spending out there, but this
probe is just so blatantly obvious!

I appreciate your analysis and *I think* by your attitude that you don't
agree. That's ok. I wanted to see how many agreed/ disagreed with the
post. While I am in favor of the Mars/ Saturn missions, etc, I really felt
that this particular experiment was a waste of money. Sorry if you don't
agree, but I expected a fair amount of disagreement. That's usenet.

How well do you understand the mission objectives? What efforts have
you made to determine the science value of the mission?
Can trolls read? Then READ!

http://deepimpact.jpl.nasa.gov/science/index.html

Now given the mission objectives, what do YOU propose as a more cost
effective method to achieve similar results, other than "not doing it at
all", which seems to be your motto, especially when it comes to
self-education.

:-)

uh... and why exactly is this a waste? This mission will finally get
direct information about the interior of a comet, of which little is
known. This is probably about the only way to get the info - besides a
vastly more complicated (and costly) lander/driller probe...

It will also be the second time we ever get near surface photos of a
comet (the impactor has a sensor/camera suite as well).

This ain't like shooting at a roadsign in the desert you know ?

The whole point is that the crash will be observed with a whole host of
equipment so that we can learn more about the composition of comets.
Considering that they are generally believed to be the closest thing we
have to a source of the primeval matter from which the solar system was
formed it's well worth having a bash at it.

So is your post!

This probe will give them a chance to learn what the comet is like just
under the surface. The main part of the probe will be some ways from the
comet while the impacter zeros in and hits the comet's body. The resulting
blast will be seen by the main probe and can be photographed, and even here
on Earth they may see some of the blasted comet too.

It's a probe to LEARN more abount the early stages and makeup of our solar
system.

Dunderheads like you can go stick their heads in the ground and save the
rest of us from reading anything.

This probe is "just so blatantly obvious". What is that supposed to mean?

Ok, guys. Read your posts and obviously about 90% are in favor of this
probe. I expected that. Now, I shall return to my realm of silence and
continue to observe that which can be observed.

Good day,
Jason
