Here, http://rst.gsfc.nasa.gov/Sect3/Sect3_2.html (on a timeline
dated February 11, 1986 and in PC testimony on February 13, 1986), MSFC Deputy Director T. J. Lee identified Challenger's *right* SRB as "hot" during the 51-L lift-off. (MSFC telemetry confirms that the right SRB had much higher Pc than the left.) On the other hand, JSC's Eugene Kranz was one of those who approved a JSC Flight Operations report (dated February 18, 1986) which states (in the Appendix, on p. 153): "The SRB's (Solid Rocket Boosters) used on 51-L were unmatched pair SRB's. Their performance appeared to be nominal. ... The data showed that the right SRB Pc was less than the left. The difference in pressure between the left and right SRB's appeared at approximately 20 seconds into the flight." [An attached plot confirms this, and reveals *no* apparent differences in Pc prior to 20 seconds, other than that one of the right SRB's sensors begins to tail off even earlier than t+20 seconds. JTM] There are also two references in this report to an unspecified "hot" SRB (on pages 22 and 25), one relative to the two-stage throttle bucket required, and the other relative to the Maneuver Monitor. I.e., JSC indicated that 51-L's *left* SRB was "hot." Who was correct, Lee on 2/11/86, or Kranz on 2/18/86? -- John Thomas Maxson, Retired Engineer (Aerospace) Author, The Betrayal of Mission 51-L (www.mission51l.com) |
