It's been a long time since I asked -- anyone heard from or know of
Starlord?

Last I heard -- 2 years ago (?) -- Dennis had suffered two strokes
and was in a VA nursing home -- someone had ransacked his trailer and
there was no word on his cats.

I've wondered too... The vicious attacks on him were one of the worst
things that ever happened to this group. A lot of people just got
sick of it and left.

You know, I might be able to track him down through the VA.
I hope he is still among the living.

If you could track him down, and if you could contact him and let us
know, that would be great.

My email address really works -- if you learn anything, let me know.
I'd like to send him some books or whatever it takes to cheer him up.

You behaved like cowards so don't try to rewrite saa history and I
assure you that despite the homely exterior polish, many turned out to
be just as bad in trying to substitute a hatred of astronomy with
personal insults.

http://groups.google.com/group/sci.a...667bee4e723a8c

A lot of people were terrified that the same thing was going to happen
to them and that is why they ran and if they were such avid
astronomers they would have returned.

Of course it would never occur to a raving lunatic, like you, that you
were a major part of the problem. There is still no thread here too
sacred for you not to share your pathetic delusions. Why don't you
**** off? Then we'll see how the forum prospers. That still leaves
Guff but if the pedants can be persuaded to avoid answering his drivel
there may still be a chance for s.a.a.

One of the notable issues of the Piltdown Man episode was how long the
community managed to ignore the fabrication even though the
perpetrator did just about everything he could have done to alert the
community after it had gotten out of hand, over 40 years to be precise
when enough reputations had faded before they undertook work to undo
the damage .There a balanced commentaries to this effect -

"Far from being a triumph of Science the hoax points to common and
dangerous faults. The hoax succeeded in large part because of the
slipshod nature of the testing applied to it; careful examination
using the methods available at the time would have immediately
revealed the hoax. This failure to adquately examine the fossils went
unmarked and unnoticed at the time - in large part because the hoax
admirably satisfied the theoretical expectations of the time.

The hoax illuminates two pitfalls to be wary of in the scientific
process. The first is the danger of inadequately examining and
challenging results that confirm the currently accepted scientific
interpretation. The second is that a result, once established, tends
to be uncritically accepted and relied upon without further
reconsideration."

http://www.tiac.net/~cri_a/piltdown/piltdown.html

The flaw based on right ascension is an incredible story, even for
somebody like me who is working actively on topics rather than a
historical commentary of what went wrong and exactly who was involved
at the outset of the failure.I hope somebody takes up this history as
it is the one thing that belongs to us and we inherit for good or for
bad.The Piltdown Man episode was far worse than the hoax itself and is
one of the main reasons why people will never settle into a comfort
zone where history is forgotten as Marty showed here,I will keep this
front and center until people take an active role in the survival of
the astronomical heritage of our species and subsequently its
intellectual heritage however poor my expression of it may be.

You are alright son, without a basic standard of facts, all can have
whatever opinions they like as they will be worthless and it wasn't
the detractor of Starlord that sent the man out of here,it was a bunch
of cowards congratulating themselves that they were not front and
center taking the heat. The topics where 'the hungry back hole swallows
a neighoring star and hiccups' or some other empirical trash like it
is more insulting than some undisciplined child screaming insults at
another for Usenet warriors are many but the same guys wouldn't dare
say these things face to face.

Call me what you will,I am the only person who is adamant that one 24
hour rotation of the Earth keeps in tandem with the day/night cycle
and that is truly, truly remarkable.People who sacrifice their
intelligence are mere complainers and it looks like you are no better
or worse than the next as the job of astronomer is not to worry who is
right or wrong but how much they can see in another's work and in
their own that renews the discipline daily.
