One thing that strikes me as a difference between the Shuttle and ISS
Mission Control Centers is that the shuttle consoles have bookshelves as their backsides, and the ISS ones don't. Is that because of the difference in mission profiles? Shuttle having one that changes dramatically at least 5 times, and the station mission profile remaining more consistent? Or is it because the backroom(s) for ISS have all the bookshelves? I've lost track of renovation cycles ... which MCC has been more recently redone? /dps |

Or did I get that backwards? Renfrew and Eglin currently sitting in front of a lot of bookshelf space, as is the team around them. /dps |

Or is it because the backroom(s) for ISS have all the bookshelves? ISS relies more heavily on electronic procedures... the flight controllers read them using the PCs next to their workstations. As you note, there is still plenty of paper documentation in the ISS FCR as well. I've lost track of renovation cycles ... which MCC has been more recently redone? Rough timeline: Apollo era: building 30M, MOCRs 1 and 2 on 2nd and 3rd floors, respectively. 1970s: building 30M, MOCR 1-2 renamed FCR 1-2 for shuttle. FCR-2 has classified access for DoD missions, FCR-1 does non-DoD missions. 1992: construction of building 30S (space station control center) begins. 1993: after last DoD flight, FCR-2 retired and restored to its Apollo-era configuration. 1995-96: shuttle flight control migrates from FCR-1 in 30M to White FCR in 30S (first orbit, then ascent/entry). FCR-1 reconfigured for ISS payload ops. 1998: station flight control begins in Blue FCR in 30S. 2008: FCR-1 reconfigured as ISS flight control room, ISS flight control migrates from Blue FCR to FCR-1. Blue FCR reconfigured for Ares I-X flight-following activities. And that is how things stand now, White FCR supporting shuttle and FCR-1 supporting ISS. |

[... interesting stuff ... ] And that is how things stand now, White FCR supporting shuttle and FCR-1 supporting ISS. Thanks, Jorge! I see the occasional CRT monitor at some of the stations ... in the foreground, when you're looking back towards the Flight Director from the front of the room, and to the right of Capcom as you look from the back corner. Gave me pause to see that. /dps |

They've just (within the last couple of weeks, I guess) thrown up an overview of the ISS FCR. http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/491256main_jsc2009e156744.jpg has a LOT of screens in view; I'll have to track down a better size for that. That's on the page at http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/behindscenes/index.html, I believe, and there's some Flash links for me to explore. /dps -- Using Opera's revolutionary email client: http://www.opera.com/mail/ |
