So for the money we are now spending in Iraq we could build 2 new space
shuttles every month, or at least 1 per month. Even just 1 per year wouldn't be bad. Any thoughts?... -- I bet that old crackpot Copernicus started one hell of a flame war when he questioned the geo-centric model of the solar system. |

Any thoughts?... Well, that's not going to happen, but I've made the point before when people say "The Golden Days of Apollo will never happen again; it cost too much." when honestly, in inflation-adjusted dollars, it was only like 2 times more what we're spending now. For a mere $15-20B a year or so we could be doing a LOT more in space, and that's really a modest program as far as the budget is concerned. All it takes is a President willing to ask for it when his party controls Congress. Bruce |

Bad idea. the shuttle is a money rat hole costing too much to operate. It would still use the same unsafe SRBs, the same foam-shedding ET, and the same inept fools would be running the show ("I didn't ask for any on-orbit pictures because I couldn't remember who made the request.") The shuttle is something that should have never gotten off the drawing board to begin with. SB |

It takes more than simply a $4B replacement of the Shuttle to create a new Golden Era. Bruce |

![]() "FF" wrote in message m... How much of NASA's budget is spent on items and programs outside that of the shuttle program? I remember reading somewhere that NASA funds a large portion of the FAA R&D. It was my understanding that NASA's budget funds a lot of US programs that have little to do with the shuttle or space exploration per say. Not entirely sure, but keep in mind what the first A in NASA stands for. As others have said, direct funding for the Shuttle program is about $4 Billion/year. I think Station is about another $2 Billion (probably a bit higher). But, the numbers are on the web. I could be wrong. JMHO Walt.. "Bruce Sterling Woodcock" wrote in message . .. The shuttle operations and R&D budget was reduced over a 10 year period time until it bottomed out around $2.9 billion, and only within the last 4 years or so has gone up about $300-400 million. The ISS budget is currently capped out at $2 billion, having dropped some since ISS is slowly transitioning from construction to operations and support. -Mike |
