I've seen the $500 Orion 80mm apo/pseudo-apo. Nice scope, simple
and it works well. Now where are the $2000 5-6" apos from the same source? -Rich |

I'm hoping the 6" is around $1200.00

Go buy yourself a copy of Telescope Optics Evaluation and Design by Rutten and
Venrooij. Then go give AP a call and get a copy of their new Telescope design software called Atmos find yourself a glass supplier buy your glass. then start tooling up BTW you will have spent way more than 2000 by now. After about oh say 200 hours worth of work you should have three lenses. I hope they are centered then you can design your lens cell. Think Apos are easy to do your about to find out Clear Skies Dwight L Bogan |

You can get a $2000 6" semi-apo if you are willing to work on lens
adjustments. It's called a used Meade 152ED OTA, muahahaha. |

Myself, I will wait until the inexpensive but decent quality APO's arrive (if they arrive). ----- It seems to me that to achieve the same level color correction in a 5 inch scope as in a 80mm using the same glass and same techniques, the focal ratio will have to signficantly slower. My guess would be that the proper scaling would place the focal ratio as linear with aperture, this would put the scope at F12, a 60 inch OTA. I am not too sure how many folks would be interested in such a scope. Jon |

Like Jeff suggests there is the Meade 6 inch ED Apo and its a whole lot better
than any Chinese Achro out there. I've said this for years the people who market the chinese scopes can take an Achro and past Apo on the tube and 90% of the people out there would not be able to tell. Oh there would be the accusations then the experts would have to get up there and denounce the manufacture but most of these cheap scope buyers would refuse the beleive what they are told. If you believe the Orion 80 ED is sooo wonderful why don't you compare it to an 80 mm long focus Achro on say Jupiter at 250x then tell me. I swear to you there are plenty of people out there who really cannot tell the difference between an Achro and an APO to save there own lives. Clear Skies Dwight L Bogan |

Price for refractive optics materials goes up by the cube of the diameter
(related to the volume of glass). The labor goes up by approximately the square of the diameter. If 1/4 of the scope is material cost, 1/4 is labor cost, the rest being import and profit for all that handle the item, then the $500 3 inch refractor should become $2500 retail at 6". Seems to me that the Meade 6" ED was quite competitive at that rate. RC |

I've heard of voodoo economics but what are Voodoo Randernomics, do
you mean picking off the wall random numbers for pricing? Caesar Garcia "CLT" not@thisaddress wrote in message ...
