Hi,
I was just wondering what kind of film people were using for astrophotography work for medium format. I can shoot both 6x6 & 6x4.5 format. I've used Fuji Superia 800 print film in the past but just wondering if there was something better that people liked. Thanks for the info. Ralph 41 16N 75 50W |

I think Kodak Ektachrome E200 is available in medium format, isn't it?
Almost no reciprocity failure, and a strong response to hydrogen-alpha. And in medium format, the grain is not going to be a problem at all. |

Ralph 41 16N 75 50W Hi Ralph, Check the archives of the APML (astro photo mail list) at: http://astro.umsystem.edu/apml/ As soon as Koda finds out a film is good for astro work they change it to make it not so. I''ve talked to Kodak people way up the food chain and they could care less about astro-people. The problem is H-alpha sensitivity is not what the human eye is sensitive to so if a film is sensitive to it then the images don't look 'natural'. A little to red. Now they probably sell 100,000 rolls of film for portrait work for every one of astro. As mentioned the E-200 / EktaChrome is good. Some of the Fuji 100 Provia pushed 1 F stop is good as is the Provia 400. The ultimate film is hypered Tech Pan (B&W). Field Curvature is not a problem with a good field flattner. My TMB-152 / Pentax 6x7-II and field Flattner does a great job. I have a lot more to learn in techniques however! Some of my pics at: http://tim.povlick.com Kodak also has a CCD back for 6x5. :-) Good Luck! Tim nnnnn AS |
