If you're talking about the preview pane go to Views menu, Layout =
option, and turn off preview pane. -Florian |

Bill,
I too can't find the same setting you're looking for! Norton AV automatically scans all incoming e-mails and quarantines any viruses it detects. But what if it's a new one that they haven't found yet or if your AV isn't updated? I just read everything via web-based E-mail now. Anything that's actually for me doesn't get deleted and read through OE if necessary. I know that's not much help, but hopefully it's a solution for you. I have read this thread and it seems very informative but
unfortunately since I am not a computer person there is great deal of it I don't understand. I would like to ask for help with a specific problem: Outlook Express seems to automatically open my emails when I click on the email box, rather than just listing them first, as Eudora, for example, does. I am concerned that by opening the emails without asking me, Outlook Express is making me vulnerable to a virus. I looked in Tools, and Properties, and didn't find a way to change Outlook Express to make it list the emails so I can decide for myself whether to open them or delete them. I hope I have explained this intelligibly.. In any case, I would welcome suggestions and advice; our posters on SAA seem very sophisticated about computers. Thanks, Bill Meyers |

Opening an email shouldn't infect you so long as you don't launch the attachment. My problem is a mass attack: My 10 meg email box is filling in 6-8 hrs wiht Microsoft-related junk .. unless I go to the server (earthlink) and delete all the spam every six hours or so. And if I let them be retrieved automatically, all have viruses. So I am using a different (and more private) server until that gets fixed. Phil |

Unfortunately "launch the attachment" can happen automatically in Outlook Express unless all the security updates have been applied. When someone launches an executable by double-clicking an attachment = they've given their permission. Same would happen on a Mac. There just = aren't many Mac viruses. -Florian |
