Tempel 1 a comet, and Eros the asteroid I'm looking at as I type this
post. Both pictures close up,and taken by man made probes. Both were crashed into by these probes. This was done so we could study its surface at as close a range as possible. Could one formulate a theory that as comets lose their water they in time get to be asteroids? Could one argue if you want to find real comets at this spacetime you have to go 2.5 LY out to the Oort cloud? They keep their water structure because the Sun's inferred rays (photons) are much to weak at that great distance. Bert |

Hello Bert
Although in general case meteor showers are linked, in their origins, to comets, there is one case that calculations on the meteoroid debris seem to point its origin with asteroid 2003 EH1. Im talking about the Quadrantids. One can guess that comets, by loosing their ice/dust cap, can become asteroids, as seems to be the case, but I think that's only appliable to short period comets, and it's caused by successive perielic passages. Long period comets tend to have longer orbits, extending to the outer solar system and even behond, periodically being exposed to high temperatures, that renew that ice cap. This morning got an interesting email from Sam Worthy. He told me we
will be going through an asteroid tail, much like a comets tail.soon That fits so well with what I have just posted. Bert |

You posted something? Must have missed it.
