Arianespace's next Ariane 5 launcher takes shape
Ariane 5's vehicle equipment bay is hoisted inside the Vehicle Assembly
Building for its integration atop the launcher, which is partly visible in
the background.
The launch campaign for Arianespace's next mission is well underway as an
Ariane 5 vehicle is readied for liftoff September 29 with a dual-satellite
payload from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana.
This upcoming flight is one of several launches planned by Arianespace
before the end of 2005, and it demonstrates the company's ability to meet
mission needs of both commercial and governmental customers.
The Ariane 5 Generic launcher for September's flight will carry the French
Syracuse 3A military communications satellite (built by Alcatel Alenia Space
for the French DGA defense procurement agency) and the Galaxy 15 commercial
telecom spacecraft (produced by Orbital Sciences Corporation for PanAmSat).
Ariane 5 is designed for such dual payloads, allowing satellites to be
paired up for cost-effective launches.
The September mission follows successful back-to-back flights during August,
in which an Ariane 5 lofted the heavyweight THAICOM 4 (IPSTAR) satellite
from the Spaceport, and a Soyuz launcher was used to orbit the Galaxy 14
spacecraft from Baikonur Cosmodrome. These two missions demonstrated another
manner in which Arianespace's launcher family concept offers customers
mission planning flexibility and reactivity to accommodate satellite
payloads when they are ready for launch
