OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE
about the return of the ISS 10 and VC-8 crews to the Earth

25.04.2005, Korolev, Moscow Region.
Following a 193-day flight program the Expedition 10 crew of the
International Space Station (ISS-10) consisting of commander, US. astronaut
Leroy Chiao and flight-engineer, Russian cosmonaut Salizhan Sharipov,
returned to the Earth in the descent capsule of Soyuz TMA-5 spacecraft.
Roberto Vittori, Italian astronaut of the European Space Agency (ESA) who
has been working onboard the ISS from April 17 through April 24 under the
visiting crew (VC-8) program returned to the Earth together with the ISS-10
crew.

The spacecraft undocked from the Zarya module of the Russian Segment of the
ISS on April 24, 2005 at 22:42 Moscow time on control commands from the
Mission Control Center in Moscow (MCC-M). The spacecraft descent was
implemented in the nominal automatic mode.
The descent capsule landed at 02:08 Moscow time near Arkalyk, Republic of
Kazakhstan. Under difficult night conditions an operative search of the
descent capsule was carried out in a timely fashion by the search and rescue
teams, which escorted the decent capsule during the parachute descent and
landing and subsequently evacuated the crew from the site of landing that
became more complicated because of a boggy soil caused by a spring slush.

The coordinates of the landing point are 51deg. 03.4min N and 67deg 18min E.
A deviation from the center of landing site was about 7 km that is
considerably less than the allowable value.
Soyuz TMA-5 spacecraft was in orbit 193 days, of which 191 days were used as
a crew rescue vehicle as part of the ISS Orbital Complex. It was replaced
with Souz-TMA-6, that delivered the Expedition 11 crew (ISS-11) consisting
of Russian cosmonaut Sergey Krikalev (commander) and U.S. astronaut John
Phillips (flight-engineer).

Soyuz TMA spacecraft being a modification of Soyuz spacecraft for operation
in the frame of the ISS Project were developed by S.P. Korolev RSC Energia
personnel in cooperation with the subcontractors of the Russian rocket and
space industry, and have been flying since November 2002.
The tasks of the ISS-10 and VC-8 flight have been fulfilled.

During the ISS Expedition 10 flight the station and its systems
functionality was supported, two cargo vehicles Progress M-51 and Progress
M-52 and a manned spacecraft Soyuz TMA-6 were received, two egresses into
space from the Russian docking compartment/module Pirs were performed, a
program of science and applied research and experiments was completely
implemented, the ISS Russian Segment outfitting with the delivered equipment
was continued, planned European ATV and ISS Russian Segment integration
activities were implemented.

ESA astronaut R. Vittori fulfilled the VC-8 program including the Eneide
experimental program, worked together with the ISS-10 and ISS-11 crews in
the Complex pressurized compartments, took part in the station emergency
rescue operations training, conducted necessary medical investigations and
physical exercises in preparation for the reentry, installed his seat liner
in the third seat of Soyuz TMA-5 descent capsule.

During the joint flight of the ISS-10, ISS-11 and VC-8 crews TV reportings
about the Soyuz TMA-6 crew arrival to the ISS took place, the joint Station
crew congratulated Yu.P. Semenov, Technical Director of Russian Manned Space
Programs, General Designer of S.P. Korolev RSC Energia, Academician of RAS
on his 70th jubilee, performed the ceremony of ISS-10/ISS-11 handover and
parting. A press conference during a TV session for the Russian and foreign
mass media was held. Video and photo imagery of the crew activities onboard
the station was conducted.

Soyuz TMA-5 reentry flight was commanded by the Lead Operational Control
Team (LOCT) located at MCC-M and working in close cooperation with the
specialists of the U.S. Mission Control Center (Houston). The Flight
Director is V.A. Soloviev, RSC Energia Deputy General Designer, flight
cosmonaut.
During the de-orbit maneuvers and reentry of Soyuz-TMA-5 spacecraft MCC-M
was attended by A.P. Perminov, Roskosmos Director, co-chairmen of the State
Board: N.F. Moiseev, Deputy Director of Roscosmos, and V.A. Grin, Deputy
General Director of TsNII of Machine-Building, Yu. P. Semenov, Technical
Manager of the Russian Manned Space Programs, General Designer of S.P.
Korolev RSC Energia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, N.A.
Anfimov, General Director of TsNII of Machine-Building, Academician of RAS,
V.V.Tsibliev, Director of GCTS RGNII, representatives of, Roskosmos, NASA,
ESA, Italian Air Forces, Russian enterprises and organizations participating
in the implementation of the ISS program.

The ISS Orbital Complex is flying in a near-earth orbit with the following
parameters: inclination of 51.66°, maximum and minimum altitudes of 377.8
and 350.3 km, respectively, period of revolution of 91.6 min. The Complex
mass is about 182,9 tons
The Expedition 11 crew, consisting of Russian cosmonaut S. Krikalev and U.S.
astronaut J. Phillips, continues in-orbit operations under the flight
program.

Following the report about the crew evacuation from the Soyuz TMA-5 descent
capsule a briefing for the Russian and foreign journalists took place at
MCC-M. The representatives of Roscosmos, NASA, ESA management, Italian Air
Forces participated in the briefing highly appreciated the execution of the
ISS-10 crew flight and Soyuz TMA-5 descent capsule landing.

The same morning Soyuz TMA-5 crew was transported to Chkalovsky airdrome by
RGNII of Yu. Gagarin GCTC plane, where they were met by representatives of
Roscosmos, NASA, ESA management, Italian Air Forces, RGNII of Yu. Gagarin
GCTC, IBMP, as well as relatives and friends. From the airdrome the crew was
brought by bus to the Star City to have a rest and post-flight activities.
