NASA OFFERS LOOK AT RETURN TO FLIGHT SPACEWALK TRAINING
Media are invited to follow the crew of the Space Shuttle's Return to
Flight mission Thursday, Feb. 24. They will be practicing for a spacewalk to
replace an International Space Station gyroscope in a pool at NASA's Johnson
Space Center, Houston.
Astronauts Soichi Noguchi and Steve Robinson will don spacesuits and
submerge in the six-point-two million-gallon Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory
pool. They will practice the second of three spacewalks planned during their
mission. The flight is scheduled for launch this spring.
While Noguchi and Robinson simulate the spacewalk underwater, the rest of
the crew will practice their roles in the spacewalk at facilities adjacent
to the pool. The spacewalk will replace a Station Control Moment Gyroscope
that failed in April 2002.
Media will have opportunities to film the spacewalkers beside the pool as
they prepare and complete the session, obtain video from cameras following
the activities underwater and to film the other crew members as they train.
Other astronauts and experts will be available during the day to provide
insight into the training activities and several Shuttle return to flight
safety enhancements.
International media representatives planning to attend, regardless of
citizenship, must contact the Johnson Space Center Newsroom at: 281/483-5111
before 6 p.m. EST, Feb. 10 to arrange credentials. Domestic media must
contact Newsroom by 6 p.m. EST, Feb. 18 to attend. Due to limited capacity,
attendance at the demonstrations may be restricted to one reporter and/or
photographer per organization.
