NEW YORK STUDENTS CALL SPACE STATION CREW
Students in Schenectady, N.Y., begin the New Year with a special long
distance phone call. They are calling Commander Leroy Chiao and Flight
Engineer Salizhan Sharipov of the International Space Station
Expedition 10 crew.
The event, including a video link with the crew, is Friday from 9:50 to
10:10 a.m. EST. Students from Central Park Middle School will chat with
the crew and learn about the vital role the Station plays in the Vision
for Space Exploration. The Schenectady School District will broadcast
the event throughout the area to enable students from other schools to
view the call live.
This activity supports NASA's efforts to encourage students to study
and possibly pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and
mathematics. The video calls enhance education opportunities that use
the unique environment of human space flight. They are an integral part
of NASA's Teaching from Space Program, which builds partnerships with
the education community.
The downlink airs live on the Web and on NASA TV, available in the
continental U.S. on AMC-6, Transponder 9C, C-Band, at 72 degrees west
longitude. The frequency is 3880.0 MHz. Polarization is vertical, and
audio is monaural at 6.80 MHz. In Alaska and Hawaii, NASA TV is
available on AMC-7, Transponder 18C, C-Band, at 137 degrees west
longitude. The frequency is 4060.0 MHz. Polarization is vertical, and
audio is monaural at 6.80 MHz.
