Crew Maintains ISS, Talks to Students
The Expedition 9 crew worked on International Space Station maintenance
tasks Tuesday and talked with students on Earth. NASA ISS Science Officer
Michael Fincke performed planned maintenance on the Station's treadmill and
inspected life support systems.
Commander Gennady Padalka installed some cargo enclosure units in the
Russian segment of the Station and tested the now-operational Elektron
oxygen generator.
Last week, the Elektron was restored to service. Padalka worked with Russian
ground controllers to troubleshoot the device. On Monday, it was turned off
while ground controllers looked at data from it, and it resumed operation on
Tuesday. Troubleshooting continues, but for now it is working normally.
Other means of obtaining a safe breathing atmosphere are available on the
ISS, so the temporary loss of the Elektron does not represent a hazard to
the crew.
Also on Tuesday, both crewmembers talked with students from Kenna Elementary
School in West Virginia. They were also scheduled to downlink greetings to
the Power Generation Science and Research Institute in St. Petersburg,
Russia, and the second annual Delphian games, also in Russia.
Mission managers are reviewing the launch date and time for Expedition 10.
Expedition 10 Commander Leroy Chiao and Flight Engineer Salizhan Sharipov,
are tentatively planned to launch aboard a Soyuz spacecraft about a week
before the departure of Expedition 9. After liftoff, they would arrive at
the ISS nearly two days later.
Also, Flight Engineer Yuri Shargin, a Russian cosmonaut, will launch to the
ISS with Expedition 10. He will live and work aboard the Station for several
days and then return home with Expedition 9. Padalka and Fincke will return
home in the same Soyuz capsule that took them to the Station. They will land
in Kazakhstan.
