I felt that all of you should know. I saw this in one of Mikes
other active newsgroups.

I posted a message yesterday, but it hasn't made it through the
moderation process. In the fullest respect for a man I never
met, I hiked to the top of the basin. I thought of him for most
of my hike to the top. I was lucky enough to have talked to him on the
phone
about 7 some odd months ago. I plan on posting the pictures of
my summer A-Basin hike, as I feel this is the very minimum of
respect I could display for Mike.

I will also be posting this seperately to the sci.space.* news groups
that led me to the rec.skiing.* groups that he help me find.
The sci.space.* newsgroups should know.

BW, thanks for letting us know. I had not seen any posts from
Mike in a few weeks. This explains a great deal.

The above is the post I made to rec.skiing.moderated. I made another
post, including the rec.skiing.moderated, but it has yet to make it
through moderation, so the posts to sci.space.* have yet to make it.
I thought you on sci.space.* would like to know. We lost a good one.
This is about the one time in a million that moderation fails to tell
the story.

No, I have nothing yet. When I know, I will let the others of this
group know. I know he was in his early 50's. Way too young to die.
His posts ment a lot to me in the sci.space.* groups, as well as the
rec.skiing.* groups. While I never meet the man, I felt a real
kinship with him. He lived near Boulder CO, and I live in Denver.
We lost a good one. Today I hiked a bit of Copper Mountain CO.
On my drive home to Denver, I decided to hike to the top of
Arapahoe Basin, to remember him. I needed to get a picture of a
ski run he made on his last ski day of skiing.

I really wish I had the chance to met him. Any sane space history
buff who skis is a pretty damn cool person in my book.

OM, cut me a little slack, but his posts in SCI & REC were some of
the best posts I have ever read. I already miss him a lot.
I treasured the man. I regret I never got to meet him.

Here is one picture of him:
http://homepage.mac.com/saemisch/A-Basin/MikesLastRun.jpg

and my attempt to show the same run today (yesterday):
http://www.sbseiber.com/mikespeegle.html
without snow & Mike.

To keep this on topic, I am currently reading "The All-American Boys" by
Walt Cunningham, his newest edition. So far, a very good read.
A few years ago when I visited KSC, Walt was the astro on stage.
His book is starting off very well, I am at page 57.

I thought of him just yesterday as I muttered under my breath
his "what a maroon" while dealing with a really stupid guy :)

....Nobody on this end is attempting to restrict your slack, Sam. I
share your grief as well. Mike's posts were worth reading without
question, and his contributions around here will be missed. Except, of
course, by Bob Haller, as I note that the last few posts I have in my
archives from Mike were ones pointing out Bob's fallacies and idiocy.

Mike will be missed.

enjoyed his input. He will be missed.

It also explains the lack of posts by Mike.

,,,A quick search on google revealed what I believe is Mike's last
usenet post, on rec.skiing.alpine, dated 7/23/03:

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=author:mikespeegle%40netscape.net&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&scoring=d&selm=bfn66h%24g2a6l%241%40ID-130573.news.uni-berlin.de&rnum=1

....Does anyone happen to know where Mike hailed from, or where he was
living at the time of his passing? An obit might be available online
that can be linked or reposted here.

He lived very close to Boulder Colorado. I looked at the Boulder
paper online (dailycamera.com), but could find nothing. I also
checked news.google.com, and again came up with nothing. I am
keeping an eye out in the ski newsgroups for further info.

I doubt it, as the last ski area in Colorado to close was A-Basin, on
July 2. IIRC, he was done skiing for the season about two months
before that.

A gentleman and a genuine contributor to this online community.

Damn ... I'm going to miss you, Mike.
