McNaught may prove to be the "Comet of the Century"! George N With nearly 93 years to go I sure hope that's not the case. But since I won't see all of it, I doubt I'll make it to 160 you may be right in my case. Though I saw Ikeya Seki less than a degree from the sun naked eye. Had to stand in the middle of a major downtown street using the top corner of a 15 story office building to hide the sun to do it. Cop wasn't very happy with me over that. Obviously not an astronomer. Tail was short and at right angles to pointing away from the sun. It was moving so fast around the sun it left the tail behind, literally showing the direction it was moving. You see some of that in the huge curving tail of McNaught as it went through a much more distant perihelion. I missed most of it here, cloudy all but one evening. Then I had to stand on heaving ice to see it. With the ice moving and groaning like some monster while I stood over 40' of 32 degree water I wasn't very comfortable and left after a big crack well before it was dark enough to see more than a couple degrees of its tail. It was plenty thick to be safe but the wind was 35 mph and really moving the ice more than this guy liked! Rick |
