Default ASTRO: NGC 253 from Namibia

Like my recent image of NGC 55 this image of NGC 253 is from my last clear
night in Namibia in September. In the preceding nights I have only used my
b/w camera, but took the chance to use my colour camera on this last night
(which came unsuspected, we had settled for cloudy nights for the rest of
our holidays).
I expected better detail in the galaxy considering the decent starshapes,
but it wasn't to be.

Taken from Kiripotib farm in the Kalahari desert with a 10" Meade ACF scope
at about 2100mm focal length (AP reducer) on a Vixen Atlux mount, QHY8
camera, 10x15 minutes resized to 66%.

All that dust makes me wonder if many of those star systems are almost
blind to the universe beyond. The stars, as you say are super. I never
get seeing like that here. I wonder if there just isn't detail in this
due to all that dust blurring things. Not paid it much attention being
too low to image here.

A farm in the desert. That sounds rather impossible unless you have a
good well to draw on.

I was in a desert a few years ago in which the residents talked up how
much water they had thanks to their wells. Then I found out they were
drawing them down a couple of meters or so a year but it was replenished
at 6 cm a year. But they had plenty of water. The logic of this
escaped me. Everyone was talking this way like if you said it enough
times it would be true.

No imaging here. We have had snow every day for a while now with many
hard frosts. They've not had this much snow this early since records
were started. I got the boat in between storms, dock hasn't been pulled
yet, but still have to get the blower on the ATV to clear the road. So
far we only have a total of about 5" or so and it is melting on roads
for now. More on the way so soon it won't melt. I really need the ATV
for other things so don't want to put on the blower (a half day job to
put on or remove) but may have to if this keeps up. At least I still
have over 70 images to process dating back to last February!

Rick,

the farm does have a good well, but the water they have is "ancient" and is
not replenished, so it will be used up at some point. But that will take
some time, currently they say that the water level falls very slowly.
Actually we had rain on my last day in the Kalahari, which has not happened
in September in the last 12 years according to a weather statistic I found
in the net. But even though the rain was quite heavy for about 30 minutes it
evaporated quickly, an hour after the rain everything was dry again.
No snow around here, until last week we had temperatures up to 25 degrees
celsius, but now it is getting cold, we'll have the first night frost at the
end of the week.
